Next time you're tempted to pour leftover cooking oil down the sink, think again. A team of British sewer flushers is up against what they describe as "solid wall of fat" under London's Leicester square, the result of years of careless flushing by the city's inhabitants. Thames Water, the company responsible for London sewers, estimates that over 1,000 tonnes of fat and waste are being removed from under Leicester Square, "enough to fill nine London Double Decker buses". According to the company, the build-up, which they nickname "fatbergs", is the result of accumulated "sewer abuse": when anything other than water,...

Americans with children aged 18 years or younger are less likely to exercise and more likely to be overweight or obese, according to a new report. The findings are based on more than 59,000 interviews with Americans, aged 18 to 50, from January to June 2010, conducted as part of the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. Participants were asked "In the last seven days, on how many days did you exercise for 30 or more minutes?" The impact on exercise was most pronounced for those with very young kids, aged 0 to 4. About 28 percent of parents in this group said...

Last week, President Obama strolled the beaches for a photo op with Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, a self-described "fat redneck." Our beanpole president made quite a contrast to the chubby gov, who, as the New York Times noted Sunday, resembles "an adult version of Spanky from the Little Rascals." Newsweek calls Barbour "the anti-Obama," but the Times downplayed his presidential prospects. Apparently, Haley needs to slim down if he's serious. Is corpulence really a disqualification for the presidency in the land of supersized fries? If so, that's a shame. America might do better with a fat president. After all, some...

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Eating dairy foods could help protect your heart, new research from Sweden suggests. Dairy foods are a major source of saturated fat in the diet, which has been associated with heart disease. However, there's some evidence that dairy foods could actually benefit heart health, for example by lowering blood pressure or reducing cholesterol levels, Dr. Eva Warensjo of Uppsala University and her colleagues note in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. To get a clearer sense of people's intake of fat from dairy and heart disease risk, Warensjo and her team measured blood levels of...

When it comes to heart health, virgin olive oil may have an edge over other vegetable fats, new research suggests. Reporting in the Annals of Internal Medicine, European researchers say virgin olive oil may be particularly effective at lowering heart disease risk because of its high level of antioxidant plant compounds. In a study of 200 healthy men, the researchers found that virgin olive oil -- rich in antioxidants called polyphenols -- showed stronger heart-health effects than the more extensively processed "non-virgin" variety. The findings suggest that virgin olive oil has more going for it than its supply of heart-healthy...

Overseas, the US Army has banned Burger King, Pizza Hut and Subway food vendors from serving troops stationed in Afghanistan. General Stanley McChrystal characterized the new policy as aimed at preserving the lives and health of our men in uniform. The cholesterol and salt in the foods served by these vendors are as deadly as the IEDs our soldiers have to face on a daily basis. What good will it do a soldier to dodge the bullets and bombs in Afghanistan only to be felled 40 or 50 years later by heart failure? The General dismissed some soldiers contentions that...

Critics say a bill pending in the U.S. Senate would do for Americans' food supply what "Obamacare" is doing to the nation's supply of health-care resources. And it's generating a surge of alarm among small-farm operators and natural food advocates. "S. 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010, may be the most dangerous bill in the history of the U.S.," writes Steve Green on the Food Freedom blog. "It is to our food what the bailout was to our economy, only we can live without money." The plan is sponsored by U.S. Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich. ... ...Shiv Chopra,...

Midway through D.C.'s February Snowpocalypse, with dystopian visions dancing in my head, I rented the 1982 sci-fi classic "Blade Runner." The movie's noir-ish picture of Los Angeles in 2019-dimly-lit and rainy, with flying cars, sexy replicants, and gruff, chain-smoking detectives-seems less prescient (and less foreboding) the closer we get to the year it depicts. As the DVD played, one thought kept distracting me: "It's so cute that they used to think you'd be allowed to smoke in the future." From a 2010 vantage point, the 21st century seems to promise an entirely different flavor of nightmare-one in which every individual...

I have always known that the problem of obesity or plain being overweight has risen in this country...but i went to a WalMart over the weekend (my wife usually does all the shopping) and noticed many, many people of all ages (especially young) that were huge. 20 year olds with huge beer bellies, young girls with massive muffin tops with tight shirts on, monstrous lardos shuffling down the aisles....geeez what is it going to be like in 20 years when they turn 40 and all have diabetes?...and no i don't think the government can do anything about it...there needs to...

Michelle Obama is a hit at home and abroad but she will come under particular scrutiny this week as she embarks on her first solo trip outside the U.S., visiting Mexico. How she performs on this diplomatic mission will be closely watched because she is not just the president's wife, she is the most prominent ambassador for her husband's foreign policies. Such trips are not a small undertaking, and they can carry more weight than might be expected. When the First Lady travels abroad, foreigners take cues about policy substance and tonality from her. They understand she is the...

Senior prom fell far short of the rite of passage Constance McMillen was hoping for when she began a legal battle to challenge a ban on same-sex dates. The 18-year-old lesbian student said Tuesday she was one of only seven students to show up at a private event chaperoned by school officials last Friday night. She said the rest of her peers went to another private event where she wasn't invited. "It was not the prom I imagined," she said Tuesday. "It really hurts my feelings. CHICAGO - Healthy middle-aged women in America will be hard pressed to get in the full hour of moderate exercise it will take to avoid gaining weight as they age, and it may be too challenging for some. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association on Tuesday found that middle-aged women need to get at least an hour a day of moderate exercise if they hope to ward off the creep of extra pounds that comes with aging. "Time is a four-letter word," said Eva Lazarra, 48, a pharmacist at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood,...

A Princeton University research team has demonstrated that all sweeteners are not equal when it comes to weight gain: Rats with access to high-fructose corn syrup gained significantly more weight than those with access to table sugar, even when their overall caloric intake was the same. In addition to causing significant weight gain in lab animals, long-term consumption of high-fructose corn syrup also led to abnormal increases in body fat, especially in the abdomen, and a rise in circulating blood fats called triglycerides. The researchers say the work sheds light on the factors contributing to obesity trends in the United...

WASHINGTON -- Michelle Obama is urging the nation's largest food companies to speed up efforts to make healthier foods and reduce marketing of unhealthy foods to children. Obama asked the companies, gathered at a meeting of the Grocery Manufacturers Association on Tuesday, to "step it up" and put less fat, salt and sugar in foods. "We need you not to just tweak around the edges but entirely rethink the products you are offering, the information that you provide about these products, and how you market those products to our children," she said.

Study Reaffirms Obesity Paradox: Obese patients at lower risk of sudden cardiac death compared to non-obese patientsObesity has long been identified as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and heart failure. But, a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center found that being skinny confers no advantage when it comes to the risk of dying suddenly from cardiac causes. Scientists found that non-obese heart failure patients including overweight, normal and underweight patients had a 76 percent increase in risk of sudden cardiac death compared to obese heart failure patients. Normal and underweight patients...
